| andrographis for colds and sinus |
Discussed by Dr. Pina on the Dr. Oz show, Andrographis paniculata is a plant that has been used in traditional Asian medicines for centuries. Since 1991, a number of studies have reported the benefits of Andrographis for upper respiratory conditions. Research studies are showing Andrographis to be both safe, and effective and shows this herb can disrupt the quorum sensing system, which allows bacteria to communicate and create 'biofilms' which make them hard to treat. One randomized, double blinded placebo controlled clinical study of 223 patients with respiratory tract infections showed that almost all symptoms (fatigue, sore throat, cough, ability to clear phlegm, sleep problems, and headache) got worse in the placebo group, while the Andrographis patients were feeling better. Even more, there were practically no side effects from taking the Andrographis, although two patients did experience transient gastric upset and itchy skin. Watch out for Dr. Pina and Dr. Peter's new e-book on the subject of herbal antibiotics coming out soon. reference: Saxena, et al. Phytomedicine 2010. 17;178-185.
